Aqaba, Oct. 26 (Petra) - Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) Chief Commissioner Shadi Majali and Canadian Ambassador to Jordan Louis-Martin Aumais explored on Monday joint efforts in protecting marine and terrestrial biodiversity through a Canada-funded project, Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Aqaba's Coastal Ecosystem (EmBRACE).
Majali noted the role of international partnerships in safeguarding Aqaba’s natural resources and advancing the blue economy to generate sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
He added that environmental preservation remains a cornerstone of regional growth, particularly in mitigating the impacts of climate change in collaboration with Canada and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
Aumais, for his part, lauded Aqaba's growing status as an economic driver and tourism hub, pointing to the recent inscription of the Aqaba Marine Reserve on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
He pledged Canada’s commitment to supporting local ecosystems through a JD6 million investment, executed alongside UNDP, ASEZA, and community partners.
UNDP Resident Representative Randa Aboul-Hosn said that the EmBRACE project takes an integrated approach by linking Aqaba’s marine and coastal habitats with its surrounding desert and mountain environments.
She added that the initiative leverages blue and circular economies to foster inclusive development, particularly for women and youth.
During his visit, the Canadian ambassador toured key conservation sites, including the authority's plant nursery, the Aqaba Bird Observatory, and the Aqaba Marine Reserve.
